Davis Cup: "Every player in the team is important": Pablo González

On Wednesday, the CELSIA Colombia Davis Cup team held their official press conference ahead of the series against Croatia, where each team will fight for a place in the Davis Cup by BNP Paribas World Group. The series will be played on clay and is set to take place between 15-17 September in the Santamaría Plaza in Bogotá.

The team, made up of Santiago Giraldo, Alejandro González, Juan Sebastián Cabal and Alejandro Falla, will be captained by Pablo González. During the press conference, they discussed how they were felling ahead of this crucial tie, where Colombia could – for the very first time – gain promotion to the competition’s Top 16.

“All of the players in the team are very important”, said Pablo González, who has been captain of the Colombian team since 2016, before going on to talk about “Gonzo’s” as the country’s second singles player. “Alejandro has played in several Davis Cup series, taking part in matches of three and five sets, and he earned us a crucial point in Uruguay. We think he’s more than prepared for this weekend”.

Discussing the conditions for the series, Pablo González highlighted the importance of the court being ready two weeks prior to the tournament and having the time to work with some of the shortlisted players ahead of time. “I think we’ve been able to take advantage of the conditions, but in any case you have to become accustomed to the altitude, the ball which is less pressurised – and because of this, we have dedicated a lot of time to our training. We’ve been working really well over the last few days”.

Meanwhile, Alejandro Falla, who joined the series following the withdrawal of Robert Farah (who still hasn’t recovered from his back injury), didn’t hold back in describing the responsibility he feels to deliver in the doubles team alongside Juan Sebastián Cabal and their determination to win Colombia this point.

“We know that this is a really important point. By chance, the team has trusted in me for this and I’m really motivated. Here, we need to be strategic, we have to make good plays and this counts in our favour; I know Juan Sebastián well, we’ve played in a number of tournaments together and this week I’ve received huge support from him, Robert and the rest of the team” he said.

There was also time for the team’s main player, Santiago Giraldo, to speak. He’s looking to fight for two singles’ points in the series. The Colombian tennis player understands the importance of winning and facing Marin Cilic, a star on the world circuit.

“As a team we are fully aware that every match is important and we have a chance to win every time. We know that Marin is the ‘favourite’ for this series – he’s fifth in the world, a Grand Slam winner – and we hold him in great esteem. We’ve played together a few times and he’s beaten me, but I’ve also beaten him – and that’s encouraging” he commented.

Finally, Alejandro González, who will be the second singles player, has left behind the injury that has been bothering him recently, making it clear that he feels perfectly well and full of confidence. “I’m doing really well, it’s been about six months since I returned from injury and it’s now well and truly behind me. I’m in good form, operating at 100%, which is one of the reasons why I accepted the invitation to play”.
