Marin Cilic, the world star who has come to Colombia for the Davis Cup

The new world number five is in Bogotá. Marin Cilic, 28, decided to join the Croatian Team and come to Colombia for the play-off tie, which will see one country promoted to the World Group in the Davis Cup by BNP Paribas. Since then, the focus has been well and truly on this giant who stands at 1.98m and is such a star in the international arena.

Not since the arrival of Kei Nishikori in 2015 (to fight the Davis Cup tie in Peireira) has our country had such a great tennis player in its midst. To that end, Bogotá – and specifically the Santamaría Plaza where this tie will take place – is readying itself for the recent Wimbledon runner-up who was also champion of the 2015 US Open, the 2016 Cincinnati Masters and a further 15 ATP titles.

The Colombian Tennis Federation interviewed Marin Cilic and asked him about his recent results, his historic win in New York and what motivated him to cup to Colombia to play in this Davis Cup tie.

This week you reached number 5 in the world. Was this result anticipated and are you looking to rise further still?
It’s not something I ever expected, but it was a goal that I set myself this year and I’ve been working really hard to achieve it. My objective now is to stay in the top five until the end of the season and to be able to maintain my position. But I’m obviously delighted with everything.

This year you reached the Wimbledon final but you had problems with your foot and weren’t able to play at your best. What memories do you have of the week?
It was a great experience to reach the Wimbledon finals and I think I was probably playing the best tennis of my life – and certainly the most consistent. Unfortunately, I suffered with this injury which was hard for me because I was unable to give 100% in the most important match of my life. But I can also take a lot of positives from the experience, I was playing really well and it has motivated me to go forward and achieve more..

Do people still ask you about being US Open Champion?
This was the best moment and memory of my career because I was playing great tennis – the best of my life. To be crowned Champion and win the trophy was a fantastic experience for me and I use the memories of this to motivate me when I play in other Grand Slams and major tournaments. I’m really thankful that it happened.

What drove you to come to Colombia for this Davis Cup tie?
I’ve always been really open and committed to representing my country in the Davis Cup ever since 2006. I always try to help the team achieve their best possible results. Last year was incredible for us, but now we find ourselves having to fight to get back in the World Group. To play for Croatia is always very special and it’s been a great experience, it’s also helped me to learn more about playing within a team and managing all the emotions.
